But Mahoney was best known, at least among the general public, for his eleven seasons as Martin Crane, the curmudgeonly father of Frasier and Miles Crane on the hit sitcom Frasier.

A year earlier, in 1951, he had travelled to IL to visit his sister Vera - who had married an American sailor during the war - and the USA made such an impression on him that he returned eight years later under her sponsorship.

"John Mahoney was a fixture on the Chicago stage", Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in remembrance.

Mahoney passed away on Sunday in his long-time home in Chicago, Illinois, according to his publicist, Paul Martino.

Mahoney appeared in the series - which, of course, starred Camille's ex-husband Kelsey Grammer - from 1993 to 2001.

IRISH AMERICAN actor and Frasier star John Mahoney has died aged 77.

Born in Blackpool, England, Mahoney came to the United States at age 19 to teach English at Western Illinois University.

After a brief stint in the USA army, Mahoney became an English teacher, and later the editor of a medical journal.

Mahoney only began acting professionally in his forties, after he joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Frasier ended in 2004, and the actor returned to Broadway in Prelude To A Kiss.

In 1986, he won a Tony Award for his role in John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves.

Mahoney was seen in many character parts on US TV in the 1980s, then landed starring roles in two dramas before his success in Frasier. He also played in Moonstruck, Say Anything and Barton Fink. He played major roles in a lot of animated movies such as Antz, The Iron Giant, and Kronk's New Groove. He also played Roy, a waiter in the city adopted by three female entertainment industry veterans, during two runs (2011 and 2014) of the sitcom Hot in Cleveland. Mahoney was unmarried and never had children.

He most recently appeared on TV screens in 2015, when he portrayed businessman Andrew Del Mar in an episode of ITV drama Foyle's War.
