Pence reached out to the U.S. Olympic Committee on January 17 to set up a meeting with Rippon, who was critical of the choice of Pence to lead the U.S. delegation at the Olympics in PyeongChang, according to the report.

"You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?" the 28-year-old said.

Rippon has already made history this Olympics: he's the first openly gay USA athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics. "This accusation is totally false and has no basis in fact. Despite these misinformed claims, the vice president will be enthusiastically supporting all the USA athletes competing next month in Pyeongchang", press secretary Alyssa Farah said.

After issuing the statement, Pence then tried to schedule a meeting with Rippon, which did not materialize.

"By sending key figures like his sister, Kim Jong Un is aiming to send a signal to the South that it is giving more weight to inter-Korean ties while driving a wedge between South Korea and the United States", said Kim Sung-han, a former South Korean vice foreign minister.

The figure skater said he wouldn't visit the White House if he was invited after the games because he doesn't think he'd be "welcome" as a gay athlete.

South Korea wants to use the Olympics to re-engage with North Korea and open the way for talks to resolve one of the world's most risky crises, in which U.S. President Donald Trump and Pyongyang have swapped bellicose threats of nuclear war.

Mike Pence waves upon his arrival at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea on Thursday.

"Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior", the statement read.

But there is no evidence that he has ever supported the controversial practice of "gay conversion" therapy which uses electric shocks as a supposed "cure" for gay people.

IL falls short at Ohio State
Penn State's Corey Keener, a Blue Mountain graduate, lost 5-4 to Ohio State's Luke Pletcher, ranked second nationally at 133. Trent Frazier scored in double figures for the 13th time in 14 games, but he made just five of his 15 shot attempts.

USA figure skater Adam Rippon has no plans on meeting with Vice President Mike Pence anytime soon.

Rippon, the 2016 U.S. men's figure skating champion was selected to his first Olympic team in January after coming in fourth at the USA national championships. Regardless, Rippon did not appear to be willing to make a sacrifice.

In the USA Today interview, Rippon said he "would absolutely not go out of my way to meet somebody who I felt has gone out of their way to not only show that they aren't a friend of a gay person but that they think that they're sick". "I hear from people that I used to go to school with who are now following figure skating, and keeping track of my career".

On Twitter, several users supported the athlete, even politicians.

Sources told USA Today that a member of Pence's staff had reached out to US Olympic Committee to see if a sit-down meeting could be arranged in South Korea but Rippon refused.
