Four dog food companies have issued recalls after reports of salmonella contamination.

The FDA reports in a news release that it is further alerting pet owners to a growing list of recalls from Arrow Reliance brands Darwin's Natural and ZooLogics pet foods.

According to the FDA, two people have picked up salmonella from the Raw Paws product shown below.

Since 2016, the administration says it has investigated six complaints of pets falling ill and dying, and two people getting sick from coming into contact with the dog food.

The FDA said the latest recall was sparked by a complaint that an adult dog that had recurring diarrhea over a nine-month period.

The recalled products were distributed in pet specialty retail stores. There were instances of illness in connection with Raws for Paws, which pulled its 5-pound and 1-pound chubs of ground turkey pet food, and none for Smokehouse, which recalled 4-ounce bags of its Beefy Munchies dog treats.

Arrow Reliance/Darwin's Natural has notified its customers directly of the recalls via email, but so far has not issued any public notification announcing February 10 or any previous recalls. Pets do not have to be apparently ill to be able to pass Salmonella to their human companions.

The FDA has, over the past week, announced recalls by several pet food producers of their products due to Salmonella or Listeria present in them.

Pets who have contracted Salmonella infections can be lethargy or have bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. "Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain". Veterinarians who wish to have dogs tested for Salmonella may do so through the Vet-LIRN Network if the pet is from a household with a person infected with Salmonella. Very young children may also be exposed by crawling on or otherwise touching contaminated surfaces and put their hands or other objects in their mouth (without handwashing), or have oral contact with an animal that has consumed contaminated pet food, or with that animal's feces.
