The fire occurred on Sunday in an apartment block in Redding, northern California.

In an effort to kill it, the resident set the arachnid ablaze with a torch lighter.

No injuries were reported from the blaze.

"It was a huge wolf spider", said Wisegarver, who is a caregiver for one of the men living in the apartment.

Deputy shot, dies trying to catch suspect
Deputies are doing a K-9 track in the area and have closed Canyon Road at 176th Street South all the way to the end of the road. Daniel McCartney, 34, was chasing the suspect when shots were exchanged, fatally wounding the officer, authorities said.

The residents will have to stay somewhere else for the time being because the building has been deemed structurally unsound. While the fire didn't kill the spider instantly, the burning spider did run into a mattress, setting it on fire - a fire that spread to the drapes and a flag collection.

But Redding Fire Marshal Craig Wittner told BuzzFeed News that the spider attack is what tenants said they were doing.

Pitt said the fire spread to a closet in the bedroom, but firefighters were able to keep it from getting into the attic or neighboring apartments.

The residents tried to put the fire out with a garden hose, but were unsuccessful, fire officials said. Firefighters ended up extinguishing the blaze, which caused about $11,000 in damage and rendered the townhouse uninhabitable, Battlion Chief Rob Pitt told KRCR.

"We'll make it work", she added.

Wolf spiders are not poisonous but they can bite if provoked.

They should be considered risky to humans and the bite may be very painful.
