Numerous reports have indicated that it is only a matter of time before the Oakland Raiders name Jon Gruden their next head coach, and the ESPN broadcaster all but confirmed that on Tuesday. "I believe we have developed a solid nucleus", he said, adding that whoever replaces him will have a chance to go to "special places".
Jon Gruden coached in Oakland for four good years, leading the Raiders to four consecutive.500-or-better seasons, including two playoff appearances and an AFC Championship.
Thompson done as Packers GM
A former linebacker for the Houston Oilers, Thompson broke into scouting with the Packers under Hall of Fame GM Ron Wolf in 1992. Ball is viewed as one of the leading candidates despite having a background in finance and not player evaluation.
The Daily News reported if Gruden does go to Oakland he might try to recruit Jets offensive coordinator John Morton to go with him and that NY will not stand in his way. After stints in college at San Diego, a year with the Saints and a four-year stint with USC, Morton returned to the National Football League as the Wide Receivers coach for Jim Harbaugh's 49ers teams. "Asked directly about about ESPN report re: interest in Jon Gruden". The offense again was abysmal, and the defense under John Pagano, going against really it's first quality quarterback in Philip Rivers, struggled mightily, allowing Rivers to throw for 387 yards with three touchdowns, and giving up 117 yards rushing.
Still, Gruden has reportedly already started lining up a coaching staff. For the first time this season it seemed Del Rio had lost the team as the effort just wasn't what it was in previous weeks. He was an Offensive Assistant under Bill Callahan with the Raiders from 2002 through 2004.
Carson Palmer Announces Retirement
The Cardinals' offseason of change won't be limited to their head coaching position. "For me that time is now. His relationship with the Bengals ended poorly, with Palmer requesting to be traded after the 2010 season.
The Raiders are 6-9 entering their Week 17 finale. Despite winning back-to-back division titles, the Raiders traded Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who dominated Oakland the following year in Super Bowl XXXVII. What have they got? "I've known him for a while".
