The Giants are expected to hire Shurmur as head coach early this week, though the head coach-in-waiting flew back to Minnesota with the team Sunday night in order to conduct exit interviews with players.

It obviously wasn't Shurmur's best coaching job, but it also wasn't anything that should cause trepidation regarding his ability to do a good job in NY. The Eagles closed the game with 38 unanswered points and a blowout victory that actually helped the NFC East rival Giants get started on their offseason plans.

Shurmur, 52, replaces Ben McAdoo, who was sacked in early December with the team mired with a 2-10 record and owners and fans upset with his handling of the benching of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.

Overall, the Vikings finished 10th in the National Football League in scoring (23.9 points a game), 11th in total yardage (356.9 a game) and seventh in rushing yardage (122.3-yard average).

In a statement on Monday, Giants president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch praised Shurmur for his, "Outstanding track record in developing young players", which will be instrumental in the rebuilding that will occur this off-season, as the Giants come out of their worst year yet. Shurmur, 52, lasted two years (2011 and 2012) with the Browns, going 9-23 before he was sacked amid an ownership change in Cleveland. "I would say probably a stern coach but at the same time a players' coach, somebody that will get on you but at the same time always have your back", he told First Take on January 3. "We interviewed six talented and qualified candidates, and we feel like Pat, with his vision and experience, is the right person to lead our team". "He is made for this moment and this opportunity".

The Vikings were able to sustain the success throughout games most of the season, but not with a Super Bowl berth on the line.

But the Giants also had problems in the locker room. Shurmur previously was offensive coordinator for the Eagles (2013-15) and Rams (2009-10).

Shurmur is finishing his second year with the Vikings.

Syrian Kurd and pro-Turkey fighters killed in Arin

In 2016, Shurmur wound up as the tight ends coach in Minnesota, where he's again rumored to have influenced the team's decision to give the Eagles a first-round pick for Bradford.
