Amazon Alexa will soon control microwave ovens

Google's own Google Assistant will also be in the spotlight - "where there's Alexa, there's likely to be Google Assistant in the mix", writes The Verge in its CES 2018 preview. As such the company is already offering its Echo lineup in different form factors.

But Amazon is cooking up another use for Alexa that could have far broader effects. Yes, you heard that right.

Nauert said that if Pakistan took decisive action against terrorists, it "has the ability to get this money back in the future". He also repeated long-standing allegations that the country provides "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan".

The remote from Amazon Prime also is voice enabled, so consumers can say which program to find. Conventional ovens - as long as they connect wirelessly - will be next. Like smart light bulbs, or a smart thermostat, or a smart security camera, or smart plugs to make your regular old non-internet-connected devices smarter. Instead of pressing multiple buttons to enable advanced microwave features, your customers can now use their voices.

Initially, there are four new capability interfaces in the Smart Home Skill API and it includes Alexa.Cooking, Alexa.Cooking.TimeController, Alexa.TimeHoldController, and Alexa.CookingPresetController. A skill for the oven will allow users to pre-heat, set a timer and turn the oven off - just by talking to it. The tools are available from Amazon for developers now, but we'll still have to wait a while to see compatible appliances. Next up? Controlling your kitchen appliances starting with microwave ovens.

Additionally, Amazon has also announced that Alexa Fund, the company's venture capital arm, has invested in June Life, makers of the June Oven, a countertop smart oven that makes cooking easier, faster, and tastier.

The functions won't work with existing microwaves, so manufacturers will have to build new smart ovens to support Alexa.

All in all, this is an interesting development in the technology sphere. We're in full-blown, this-is-a-real-product-category and you should start paying attention to what's happening in this space because things are about to get really interesting. Hopefully, these companies are considering or taking necessary precautions to make sure that nothing leads to a unsafe situation or accidents.
