Trump announced earlier this month that Washington would recognize Jerusalem - whose status as capital is also claimed by Palestinians - as Israel's capital and that the U.S. Embassy would move to the ancient city from Tel Aviv in a few years, RFE/RL reported.

The Egypt-drafted text sought to ensure that any attempts to alter the characteristics or demographic composition of the Old City of Jerusalem had no effect and were rescinded.

He called on the global community to adhere to relevant Security Council resolutions and strengthen their efforts for the resumption of negotiations in order to find a solution to key issues, including the final status of Jerusalem.

Fourteen council members voted in favor of the Egyptian-sponsored resolution that would have demanded Trump reverse course on the decision.

The vote came less than two weeks after Trump's controversial speech, which reversed decades of USA policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In his opening remarks to the Palestinian leadership meeting Monday evening, President Mahmoud Abbas said Palestinians will return to the United Nations to seek full membership for Palestine, while announcing a series of countermeasures against the US move. Trump also plans to move the United States embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Since the decision, at least nine Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,900 injured in protests in the occupied territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

The European Union reiterated that its position is that a realistic resolution between the Israelis and Palestinians is a two-state setup with Jerusalem as the capital of both.

It came ahead of a planned trip by the USA vice-president, Mike Pence, to Jerusalem on Wednesday that was set to take place amid a deep rupture in U.S.

"We are ready to become an honest mediator here", he said. "The worldwide community must work now to protect the Palestinian people". The draft resolution had included a call on all countries to refrain from opening embassies in Jerusalem, reflecting concerns that other governments could follow the USA lead.

The resolution was promptly vetoed by the United States.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the USA for using its veto in a video posted to Facebook.

The only support for the United States came from Israel.

Indeed, our president is letting the world know - including the anti-Semitic United Nations cesspool in Manhattan - that their historical Jew hatred will not be tolerated and that politics-as-usual will take a back seat to the enduring truths of the Bible, in which the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob mandated that their inheritance of the land of Israel is totally immutable.
