At least 10 people, including eight Coptic Christians, were killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire outside a church in a south Cairo suburb, Egypt's Health Ministry spokesman said Friday.

One attacker was killed and another has fled the scene on a motorbike, the statement added.

A gunman fired at worshippers and Egyptian police stationed outside a Coptic Orthodox church near Cairo and killed nine people before being wounded and arrested.

Egyptian authorities are calling the attack a foiled attempt - as they say the gunmen had explosives that could have made the attack even deadlier. Two other bombs were defused near the church. It was the latest attack targeting Egypt's embattled Christian minority.

Authorities have shut off the area around the church.

IS claims responsibility:Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack without providing evidence for the claim, while Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar issued directives to security officials to raise the security alert to the maximum level across the country, in the wake of the foiled terrorist attack.

One attacker was shot dead by security forces, the sources and the state-run news agency Mena reported.
