The New York City police department on Monday confirmed reports of an explosion of an unknown origin near Times Square

Police had said earlier the only injured person was a man detained in connection with the explosion, which took place in the station at the Port Authority bus terminal, not far from New York's iconic Times Square.

The improvised device was only partially detonated, officials said, characterizing the incident as an "attempted terror attack". Authorities are investigating how it was made, but think the suspect may have made the bomb at work, CNN reported.

Law enforcement sources told The New York Post on Monday that a possible explosion was reported at New York City's Port Authority bus terminal on 42nd Street. Four people, including Ullah, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

"It's some type of explosion of unknown origin and the building is being evacuated as we speak", a police spokesman said.

Four people have been injured in a blast at a subway station in the heart of Manhattan, in what the mayor of NY said was an "attempted terrorist attack".

Following Monday's attack, commuters told of mass chaos and a "stampede" following the explosion as NY commuters fled in terror through the smoky passageway.

There is no other immediate threat, according to the mayor.

How bomb was made: According to a senior NY law enforcement official and a city official being briefed on the investigation, Ullah told police he made the device at his workplace. Then a cloud of smoke and ash overtakes the camera; as it clears, you can see bystanders running to safety.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and President Donald Trump have been briefed on the incident, according to local media and the White House. "Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals".

He commended first responders and said there were "minor" injuries from the "essentially low tech" explosive device.

An ABC7 report said Ullah has an address in Brooklyn but is originally from Bangladesh. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the blast.

Mr Ullah has, up to now, also held a clean record in the USA, with just traffic violations cited by the police.

Police were not yet identifying the device used.

However, he did not drive a NY yellow taxi or work for Uber. A police officer is holding the man's hands behind his back.
