The question now becomes whether the trade will continue to help San Francisco as the club moves into the future, or whether it's the type of deal that only further masks the long-term issues facing the franchise. At the age of 32, Longoria has showed signs that he's declining offensively, as he posted a career-low.313 on-base percentage last season.

Unlike other teams that might have gone in the opposite direction, the Giants' response to last season's bottoming-out has been to think big for 2018. He's also a great leader in the clubhouse and a great asset to the Giants, who are hoping to reload quickly after a disappointing 2017 season.

This means that, even with McCain's absence, the GOP can suffer one more defection and still get the bill through. President Trump told reporters at the White House Sunday afternoon that he spoke to McCain's wife, Cindy.

While Longoria is a solid solution for San Francisco's problems in the short-term, there are significant consequences the Giants might face into the future because of this trade. San Francisco wanted a two-way threat, and Longoria's power and Gold Glove defense are exactly what the Giants were looking for in the trade market. The Giants are likely to be serious bidders for at least one of the big-name free agents still available. Tampa Bay is expected to cover some of the $86 million that he's still owed.

However, there is a potential high reward which could return, Longoria is just one year removed from a 36-homer campaign. On the field, he should add depth to the Tampa Bay outfield, although he may not warrant an everyday job at this point in his career. He was ranked the top prospect in the Giants system according to MLB Pipeline and made his debut last summer. He will be Tampa's no. 4 prospect and could end up being Longoria's replacement. The Tampa Bay Rays bid farewell to their franchises best player, and closes the door on an era which saw a number of year of prosperity large in part due to their superstar third baseman. There have always been rumors that Adeiny Hechavarria was on the trading block in Tampa. Arroyo was a possibility to take over third base in 2018, but the Giants have decided on Longoria instead. If not they could keep him on a $13 million team option.

The Giants tied the Detroit Tigers for worst record in baseball last season in an injury-ravaged campaign. But adding Longoria is a good place to start.
