Sabrina, a new TV series based on the comic book The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina from Archie Comics, moved from The CW to Netflix, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

Sabrina's acquisition sheds light on Netflix's plan for the future: comic book adaptations.

In the introduction to Chilling Adventures' original collected edition, Aguirre-Sacasa said this of the comics' tone: "If Afterlife with Archie was about Lovecraft and zombies and body horror, Sabrina would be more psychological, a bit more subtle (but only a bit), a bit more sexual (as stories about witches often are)". This dark coming-of-age story deals with horror, the occult, and witchcraft and finds Sabrina struggling to reconcile her dual nature (being half-witch and half-mortal) while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil. The Sabrina series is set up under Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros.

After Netflix saw how people responded to Stranger Things' second season by making even more memes than the first, and presumably saw how much people talk about Riverdale weekly, why not shoot for the next big thing? Originally planned as the partner to Riverdale, The CW's hit series, The CW ordered a Sabrina series earlier this year. The Sabrina series could be the first of many Riverdale spin-offs, with Aguirre-Sacasa saying before the show debuted that he wanted to "expand" the world of the series. The character had her own live-action sitcom starting in 1996, with Melissa Joan Hart in the role. As we've seen, Netflix is also willing to spend plenty of money on shows - which could mean a noticeable bump up in quality for the show.
