The Kremlin said Putin phoned the United States president to thank him and to convey his gratitude to the CIA, adding that Russian security agencies would continue to provide any information they obtained about potential terror threats against the United States, as it has done in the past.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked US President Donald Trump during a phone conversation at the initiative of the Russian side for the intelligence data provided by the CIA that helped detain the terrorists.

The White House did not disclose details about the plot itself, but said the attack "could have killed large numbers of people".

Trump said he was "quite sad" to see Mueller had obtained the emails but doesn't think they contain any incriminating information. A spokesman for Mueller said all documents related to the investigation had been obtained through normal means.

The group was preparing to blow up the Kazan Cathedral and other crowded places in Russia's second city, Interfax quoted the Kremlin as saying.

Putin said that he doubted Trump would be able to improve relations between their two countries because the U.S. President was being held back by his political opposition, and allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election were being invented to raise doubts about Trump's legitimacy.
