Uttar Pradesh reported 14.5% (49,262) of total cases of crimes against women followed by West Bengal (9.6%) (32,513 cases) during 2016.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report has placed Mumbai first in offences against senior citizens and second, after Delhi, in crimes against women as well as children.
Kidnapping and abduction of children accounted for 52.3% of the cases followed by cases reported under POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act) - 34.4%.
If one took corrected figures for the past years as well, 2016 would in fact reflect an increase of about 2.6 per cent in overall crimes. In the crimes against children, 145 cases were of kidnapping or abduction, 46 were of compelling girls for marriage.

Cyber crime has witnessed a rapid increase as the State registered 616 cases in 2016 when compared to 536 cases in 2015 and the NCRB report has put the AP in the sixth place in the list of States with highest cyber-crime cases. Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases of atrocities against STs accounting for 27.8% followed by Rajasthan with 18.2% (1,195 cases) and Odisha with 10.4% (681 cases).
From 73.26 lakh crime incidents registered under various laws in 2015, the number dropped to 48.31 lakh in 2016.
Total 84,746 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty were reported in 2016. The murder cases reported last year also saw a marginal rise when compared to the same of previous year.

Atrocities/crime against Scheduled Castes have increased by 5.5 per cent in 2016 (40,801) over 2015 (38,670), while atrocities/crime against Scheduled Tribes have increased by 4.7 per cent in 2016 (6,568) over 2015 (6,276). Other cases like murders, kidnap and cyber crime have registered an increase.Andhra Pradesh recorded 193 dowry deaths as against 174 in 2015, apart from 31 women trafficking and 626 kidnapping and abduction of women cases past year.
