PM Modi commissions Scorpene-class submarine INS Kalvari into Indian Navy

Mumbai: Marking an important milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commissioned and dedicated to the nation the country's first indigenously-built Scorpene-class submarine "INS Kalvari" into the Indian Navy.

The submarine has an overall length of 67.5 metre and a height of about 12.3 metres.

The submarine boasts superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dynamically optimised shape and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision-guided weapons, said MDL.

The second of the Scorpenes under construction at MDL, Khanderi, was launched in January 2017, and is undergoing rigorous sea trials. There are another three in the line. The project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Apart from INS Chakra and INS Arihant, which are nuclear-powered, the Indian Navy has 13 submarines - four belonging to the Shishumar class and nine to the Sindhughosh class. Addition of Kalvari is definitely a major boost for the Navy. It was procured from Russian Federation. Meanwhile, nuclear submarines were commissioned. He said the skill-set accumulated during the manufacture of INS Kalvari is an asset for India. But, according to experts, Indian Navy can't afford to overlook the advantages of conventional submarines, which are smaller in size and easy to operate in littoral spaces.

The Scorpene submarines can undertake multifarious types of missions, such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance, it said.

It is the first current submarine to be initiated into the Indian Navy following more than 17 years even as the navy's submarine arm celebrates its golden jubilee this year. The PM will unveil INS Kalvari's plaque at the commissioning ceremony which will be preceded by reading out the commissioning warrant, hoisting of colours and breaking of commissioning pennant with national anthem.

Kalvari is named after the dreaded tiger shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.

"It signifies strengthening of the growing strategic ties between India and France", Modi said.

Congratulating the MDL for restarting the production line of submarines once again, Defence Minister Mrs Nirmala Sitharaman, thanked the Yard workers, who she said "mattered high on this day". "They say, 21st century is Asia's century, it is also true that the path of success for the 21st century will be through the Indian ocean", he added.
