Dozens killed, many wounded in Kabul multiple blasts

The statement was made after a double suicide attack hit Kabul earlier in the day, claiming the lives of 41 people and injuring 84 more: one took place near the Sada-i-Afghan (Afghan Voice) news agency and the other reportedly hit a cultural center.

A deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Nasrat Rahimi, said that at least 40 people had been killed and another 30 wounded, but that was an initial accounting.

According to a report this month by media freedom group Reporters without Borders, Afghanistan is among the world's most unsafe countries for media workers with two journalists and five media assistants killed doing their jobs in 2017, before Thursday's attack.

In November an attack on Afghan broadcaster Shamshad TV in Kabul, claimed by the Islamic State group, left at least one person dead and two dozen others wounded.

According to them, there were at least two, maybe three suicide bombers who also used grenades in the attack.

The attack has not yet been claimed by any insurgent group.

The Taliban immediately denied any involvement in the attack.

The attack, on 38th anniversary of the Soviet invasion, occurred during a panel discussion at the Tabian Social and Cultural Centre - with much of the crowd comprised of students and journalists, Reuters reported.

'It is said that target of attack was media center & education facility. "But many governors and local officials are unable to accept the principle of media independence, and the police and military are implicated in several cases of violence against journalists", the note read.
