Somalia: Suicide bomber hits Mogadishu police academy

Police said the suicide bomber strapped with a bomb vest blew up during rehearsals in preparation for the December 20 Police Day celebrations in Somalia. On November 13, the Pentagon said USA forces had killed more than 40 Shabaab and Islamic State fighters over four days.

"So far 15 have died and 17 others were injured", Reuters reported, citing a police officer.

Mohamed Hussein said that the bomber who infiltrated Gen. Kahiye Police Academy on Thursday targeted police officers during their regular morning exercises.

"The explosive device was attached beneath the driver's seat of the vehicle", said police officer Ibrahim Mohamed.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The airstrike, conducted southwest of Mogadishu, was done in coordination with the Somali government and was against "an al-Shabaab vehicle-borne improvised explosive device", according to the command.

Somalia's militant group Al-Shabab has been blamed for the massive truck bombing in the capital in October that left 512 dead.

"This strike supports our partner forces by removing an imminent threat to the people of Mogadishu", according to the statement.

Al Shabaab is keen on waging an insurgency against the African countries in a bid to topple the weak administration and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam.

A 22,000-strong African Union force (Amisom) is in Somalia trying to help the government recapture territory from militants.
