At least two people were killed Saturday after a small plane crashed into a home near San Diego.

The Beech B-36 Bonanza took off from Montgomery Field, a half-mile to the west, and the engine stalled, police were told.

Abe Bejjani lives next door to the home exploded, said that he was busy watching the television when the big explosion was heard to which he thought that it might have been a propane barbecue blowing. The house the aircraft plunged into was apparently empty at the time, officials said.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said 50 officers headed to Chandler Drive, ready to help evacuate residents if the fire spread house to house. When he got to the back yard of the home, he saw the wreck of a small, single-engine plane in the house.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the pilot and a passenger were taken to a hospital with burns, and two passengers died at the scene. Authorities said at an afternoon press conference two of the four people on board were killed in the crash. It was fully extinguished around 5 p.m. local time. Federal Aviation Administration Public Information Officer Allen Kenitzer said the FAA and the NTSB will investigate the crash.

All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted, but 2,500 structures remain under threat, the fire department said. The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District closed all of its schools Wednesday and Thursday.
