Uber agrees to buy 24000 Volvo SUVs in its march toward self-driving vehicles

While vehicles being tested by the two companies in Tempe and Pittsburgh have a driver in the front seat as a failsafe, the idea is that, eventually, the auto that responds to your ride request through the Uber app would come to you autonomously.

"Our aim is to be the supplier of choice for AD ride-sharing service providers globally". As a part of the agreement, Uber plans to buy as many as 24,000 autonomous vehicles from Volvo by 2019, once the technology is production-ready.

Not to forget Uber has had fights with its driver community and this interesting deal with Volvo could help Uber to take a new turn in future.

The base vehicles "incorporate all necessary safety, redundancy and core autonomous driving technologies that are required for Uber to add its own self-driving technology", the statement said.

The self-driving system that would be used in the Volvo cars - which have yet to be built - is under development by Uber's Advanced Technologies Group.

Niklas Pollard and Heather Somerville writing for Reuters reported that Uber plans to buy up to 24,000 self-driving cars from Volvo, marking the transition of the US firm from an app used to summon a taxi to the owner and operator of a fleet of cars.

"The automotive industry is being disrupted by technology and Volvo chooses to be an active part of that disruption", said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of the company.

The deal signed on Monday sees Uber acquiring 24,000 XC90 SUVs between 2019 and 2021, with the autonomous vehicles destined to be used on USA roads alone.

The deal builds on a $300 million alliance Volvo announced with Uber previous year focussed on collaborating on the design and financing of cars with self-driving systems, which require different steering and braking features and sensors.

President Donald Trump has announced the U.S. is putting North Korea's "murderous regime" on America's terrorism blacklist. A country must "repeatedly provided support for acts of worldwide terrorism" to get the label from the U.S. government.

No doubt the Uber deal is an attractive one for Volvo: the Chinese-owned company is in the midst of a comeback that will likely see it set a sales record for the fourth straight year in 2017.
