France to host 2023 Rugby World Cup

In a surprise move, France has been announced as the host of the Rugby World Cup in 2023, following an announcement by World Rugby in London.

South Africa was named as the preferred host nation by World Rugby's independent review, but that only sparked spiky reactions over that process from Ireland and France.

France held the Rugby World Cup in 2007.

The team behind Ireland's bid to host the tournament had vowed to "compete to the final minute" after their efforts were dealt a blow.

"However, in the feedback sessions I am sure we will be recommending to the World Rugby Council that the verdict of the evaluation committee become binding".
