Cox was hurried to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was articulated dead, O'Shea said.

Rockford police have not released the cause of death but they believe a shooting occurred. Chief Dan O'Shea has not said if the officer died of a gunshot wound.
Rockford police have not confirmed if the suspect did in fact take Cox's gun. He was a graduate of Hononegah High School and Northern Illinois University.
Prior to joining the Rockford PD, Cox served as part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Cox was pronounced dead at the hospital.
