Amid Opposition's 'Delay' Allegation, Parliament's Winter Session Likely To Convene From December 15, Says Report

Parliament winter session to commence on 15 December

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs today has recommended the dates for parliament's winter session. The session will end on January 5.

The meeting was chaired by Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh to discuss legislative agenda for the coming session of Parliament. "December 25th and 26th will be Christmas holidays".

According to a statement by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, he appealed to all Political Parties for fruitful and constructive discussions on important Bills and ensure smooth functioning of both the Houses of the Parliament. "We expect that we will have attendance on all 14 days, including the New Year's day".

The winter session is traditionally convened in the third week of November and lasts until the third week of December.

In a 2-page memorandum submitted on Tuesday, its leaders pointed out that lame excuses are stated by the government to delay the winter session of Parliament in view of the ensuing Gujarat Assembly elections.

Earlier this week Congress president Sonia Gandhi had launched a scathing attack on the Centre over the Winter Session.

The Congress party claimed that the government is delaying the winter session in Parliament so as to avoid debates on scandals including the Rafale deal, while the Gujarat elections are on.

Rejecting opposition criticism that the government wants to avoid parliament before the elections, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the session will be held and it will be a regular session, not overlapping with the Gujarat Assembly election dates.
