Myeshia Johnson cries over the casket in Miami of her husband Sgt La David Johnson who was killed in an ambush in Niger

La David Johnson spoke out for the first time Monday, after the combat death of her husband led to a political fight between President Trump and a Florida congresswoman. The widow also said Trump was "stumbling on trying to remember" her husband's name, which made her "cry even more".

Wilson, who is close to Johnson's family and was in the vehicle when Trump's call came, claimed that Trump said Johnson "knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurts". In addition to Johnson, three other US soldiers were killed.

Ms Wilson has come under heavy criticism from Mr Trump and his supporters for publicly accusing the President of being insensitive in a phone call to Mrs Johnson two weeks ago, after her husband died in the line of duty.

"Not only does he owe me an apology but he owes an apology to the American people, because when he lied on me he lied to them, and I don't think that's fair, and I think that's wrong", Wilson said on Sunday's broadcast of MSNBC's AM Joy.

Trump's broadside came a day after the White House defended Chief of Staff John F. Kelly after he mischaracterized Wilson's remarks at a 2015 Federal Bureau of Investigation building dedication and called her an "empty barrel" making noise.

Trump called the condolence call a "respectful conversation", claiming that he used the soldier's name "without hesitation!" "What she said was 100 percent correct", Johnson said. Trump denied that he said the words that Rep. Frederica Wilson alleged Trump said.

"That is something that you can say in a conversation, but you shouldn't say that to a grieving widow", she said.

When Stephanopoulos asked if she believed she would get the answers to questions surrounding her husband's death, Johnson said: "If I keep pushing for them, I will".

John Kelly told reporters at the White House that Trump had expressed his condolences "in the best way that he could". "I don't know what's in that box", she said.

"He was so offended that a woman would be - that somebody would be listening to that call", Trump continued.

He has dismissed the account of the phone call given by Ms Wilson as "totally fabricated". She was principal of a school Johnson's father attended. "The only way he remembered my husband's name because he told me he had my husband's report in front of him and that's when he actually said La David. I don't know anything". She wants to see his body to confirm it's him, but the military has not allowed that, she said.
