The latest Gallup poll finds record public support for legalizing marijuana, including a majority of Republicans for the first time in the half a century the organization has been asking the question.
More Americans than ever support legalizing marijuana, according to the most recent Gallup poll. In 2001, it grew to 34 percent - and since 2013, a majority of Americans have backed the idea.
Gallup first asked national adults about their views on the topic in 1969, when 12% supported legalization.

This will be the second marriage for Stamos, who was previously Wednesday to model-actress Rebecca Romijn from 1998 to 2004. McHugh told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year that she and Stamos prefer to keep their relationship private.
"At a time when the majority of states now are regulating marijuana use in some form, and when almost two-thirds of voters endorse legalizing the plant's use by adults, it makes no sense from a political, fiscal, or moral perspective to maintain the federal prohibition of marijuana", Strekal said in a statement.

Supposed sharp-eyed critics of suburbia: No seriously, we never knew about Weinstein

Marijuana is still illegal under federal law, but states have been taking the matter into their own hands and voting to approve sales of medical and recreational cannabis. That still lags far behind Democrats at 72 percent and Independents at 67 percent. 51 percent of GOP respondents supported making cannabis legal to purchase, a noticeable spike compared to 42 percent in 2016. While it's true that this increase in support for legalization has not led to the same rapid changes in the law we saw when it came to marriage equality, much of that can be attributed to the differences in how those laws can be changed.
The sharp shift in Republican voters' views on pot is the most significant finding in the Gallup poll, coming during a time of increased federal skepticism of marijuana legalization efforts. "Over the past several years, Gallup has found that Americans have become more liberal on a variety of social issues".
Over half the USA has legalized some form of marijuana use. "This is a clear mandate for the legislature to enact sensible marijuana laws to help the state create a workable budget".
