Alyssa Milano asked women to say"Me too if they had been sexually assaulted or harassed

The trend was started by U.S. actress Alyssa Milano who asked all women who had been sexually harassed or assaulted to share their experiences in light of allegations against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. Those two words soon became a hashtag, the top trend nationwide on Twitter and yet another rallying cry for women - and men - who have experienced some type of sexual harassment or assault.

There are some Hollywood and Broadway names among the responses, including Anna Paquin, Debra Messing and Anika Noni Rose.

Milano said she is passionate about women's rights.

Here in Quebec, people were shocked when, in 2005, former child star Nathalie Simard came forward with her story of sexual abuse at the hands of her former mentor Guy Cloutier, who she alleges first raped her when she was 11.

The tweet drew more than 25,000 responses in a matter of hours, with many people replying "me too".

The messages kept pouring in not just from women but men too. "I never told anyone", she said.

The declarations also took over Facebook and reportedly French women did something similar by tweeting their experiences of being sexually harassed at work using the hashtag "balancetonporc" or "squeal on your pig".

"It's taken me 13 years to say #MeToo".

The MeToo Twitter campaign was at least the second of its kind since decades of sexual abuse allegations emerged against film producer Harvey Weinstein.

"While about 46,000 people have replied to the original tweet, many more have simply tweeted "#MeToo" themselves, with or without further details about their experiences.

"You've given me the courage to finally speak out and not be afraid". According to Twitter, the hashtag has already been used more than 200,000 times.

Milano called the Weinstein allegations "disturbing" in an essay last week, but added that the issue was complicated for her because she is friends with Weinstein's wife, Georgina Chapman. "Men who undermine women and their strength, ability and intelligence exist everywhere".
