North Korean leader Kim Jong-un issued a direct statement Friday that attacked U.S. President Donald Trump and warned America could "pay dearly" for threatening military action. The North has threatened to test a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific. A foreign ministry spokesman said Friday that is Trump's assertion is "not consistent with the facts", giving no indication what steps China might be taking.
The world hasn't dealt with an atmospheric test since 1980, when China detonated a weapon over Lop Nur, in the country's northwest, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. "There's a certain amount of bluster that's taken for granted when you're dealing with North Korea", the official told Reuters.
China was widely condemned for a similar test with a missile that exploded over its Lop Nur test site in the country's west in 1966.
All six of North Korea's nuclear tests thus far, dating to 2006, have been conducted in underground tunnels.

That figure would inch up by $10 billion each quarter until it reaches $50 billion in monthly reductions a year from now. The central bank has raised that rate three times since December as the economy has gradually improved.
It is "a forlorn hope to think that we will be shaken...by hostile forces", Ri said Saturday.
"To put a live nuclear warhead on a missile that's only been tested a handful of times, overflying potentially populated centers".
For North Korea, the threats to overturn of the social system and "regime change" have always been in their comfort zone, as they did not expect a US president to actually act militarily against them.
"A key method is to look at the seismic waves or seismic acoustic waves and the latter can be detected in the case of a manmade quake", said the South Korean official, who asked for anonymity.
In an attempt to divide the USA and its allies, a common North Korean tactics, Ri said that North Korea will take action against the US if attacked, but will not target those countries which do not fight alongside the U.S. "They want to shut us all up for doubting they could build it".
Trump imposing new sanctions on North Korea
Kim said Trump would face "results beyond his expectation", without specifying what action North Korea would take next. Trump came up with his new nickname for Kim during a speech to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
There are also concerns about the potential for radioactive fallout in the blast zone. North Korea's recent missile launches over Japan especially drew stern rebukes from Tokyo and the global community.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un responded to Trump's fiery speech at the United Nations with one of his own, threatening to "tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire". "In this case we saw none. A lot of dead fish too".
Washington on Thursday authorized a tough new raft of sanctions in the latest effort to tighten the screws on Pyongyang over its banned weapons programs, following its sixth nuclear test - the largest yet - and the firing of two missiles over Japan in recent weeks.
As Trump himself might say, Kim is a "bad dude" who, perhaps, in calling the president a senile old man, isn't totally wrong just this once.
