Chief minister Vijay Rupani had called the project as "Gujarat's lifeline" noting that the agriculture income and production of farmers in the state more than doubled because of it.
The Prime Minister recalled Sardar Patel's vision of the dam. "But we were determined to complete the project", said Modi, addressing a rally about 55 kilometres from the dam site in Dabhoi town of Vadodara district.
The dam is 1.2-km-long and 163 meters deep. "It did all it can to ensure India cannot have such a mega project". At one time, the entire world had ganged up against the scheme, the World Bank decided and stopped the loan to the ambitious project on the pretext of environment but the people of Gujarat stood firm.

"Ninety-nine per cent of the families, who were partially affected by the dam's backwater, had already left their places and are comfortably staying in the State government-run shelter homes or rehabilitated", he said.
