Violent crime rising throughout US, FBI says

The report showed that overall violent crimes increased by 4.1 percent in 2016, after rising by 3.3 percent in 2015.

The FBI said it was the first time violent crime rose in consecutive years in more than a decade.

The FBI data shows that violent crime rose by 3.9 percent and murder jumped by 10.8 percent in 2015 in the country.

The rates of violent crimes reported to municipal police agencies rose in several communities previous year, including in the Village and Town of Hamburg, Lockport, Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Orchard Park, the City of Tonawanda, Evans, the Town of Niagara and West Seneca.

Across 10 Northern California cities, only three had violent crime rates below the national rate in 2016.

The 2016 statistics show the estimated rate of violent crime was 386.3 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants, and the estimated rate of property crime was 2,450.7 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. "And we must do it together".

According to the report, there are fewer robberies, burglaries and thefts in the Garden State - but more reported rapes.

The number of property crimes were up - 2,259 in 2016 compared to 2,166 one year earlier - while the number of burglaries was almost identical; 602 last year and 603 in 2015. In 2005 and 2006, the US also experienced a similar two-year rise in violent crime.

Major Patrick Coon of the Lima Police Department offered slightly different figures for several categories of crime than were cited in the Federal Bureau of Investigation report. Burglaries, larcenies, motor vehicle thefts and arson cases are considered property crimes.

Violent crime, like crime in general, had been steadily trending downward since the early 1990s, but Monday's report marks the first time since 2005 and 2006 that the USA has experienced a consecutive year-to-year rise in violent crime.
