Sharif, 67, resigned during his third stint as prime minister after the Supreme Court ruled on July 28 that he should be disqualified and ordered a criminal probe into his family over allegations stemming from the "Panama Papers" leaks of global offshore companies.

Although Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif was the first choice for NA-120 as PML-N candidate along with premiership, the nomination was withdrawn by Nawaz Sharif and he was told to continue in his province.

According to media reports, as many as 35 candidates have filed nomination papers for the by-poll scheduled to be held on September 17.

Sharif is now holding rallies across Punjab, where the city of Lahore - the Sharif family's home town - is the provincial capital.

At a speech during a stop in the town of Jehlum, Sharif noted that he was voted into office by the people but judges ousted him. There were no charges of corruption or kickbacks on me.

Sharif said that across his journey he saw that citizens had not accepted his disqualification and asked his supporters to await his next move, without elaborating.
