French prosecutors launch investigation into vehicle ramming attack

Police confirmed they have made one arrest after six soldiers were injured when a BMW ploughed in to them close to military barracks in a Levallois-Perret suburb, north west of the French capital.

Police are searching for a BMW auto that rammed into a group of soldiers in the northwestern Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret.

After reviewing video surveillance, police descended onto Paris and the surrounding area, conducting vehicle searches in their hunt for the attacker, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

Sky's Europe Correspondent Mark Stone said: 'It is a subject of intense debate in France whether Operation Sentinelle - soldiers on the streets, helping out the police force - exacerbates the situation and they themselves become targets because they are literally everywhere, not only in Paris'.

It has been reported the injured soldiers are being treated at the Percy military hospital in Clamart, but their precise condition has not been made public.

The group of soldiers is part of France's Operation Sentinel, set up in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in January 2015.

The incident took place at around 8:00 am (0600 GMT) in the northwestern suburb of Levallois-Perret.

Levallois-Perret is about 5 kilometers from the center of Paris.

Minister of the Interior Gerard Collomb said the attack was a "deliberate act". He said the auto "accelerated very quickly when they left" the building.

Paris police say a vehicle has injured six soldiers, two seriously, in what the local mayor has said was a "disgusting" deliberate act.

It accelerated as it neared the troops, rammed into them and then sped away.

In February, a man with a machete attacked troops near the Louvre Museum.
