4 Indian states have claimed over 200 lives and displaced millions

The latest floods and landslides in the subcontinent began in the second week of August, as the annual monsoon strengthened its grip over the northern and eastern parts of the region. Flooding in low-lying and densely populated Bangladesh is expected to increase as rains continue and water arrives from upstream in Nepal and India.

In India, 168 deaths were reported in Bihar and Assam states, the worst-hit by the floods.

The regional crisis has affected 16 million people and there are growing concerns about food shortages and disease.

Nearly 16 million people are thought to have been affected by the flooding, with army soldiers and disaster management workers across the three countries launching mammoth rescue efforts to evacuate and provide food and shelter to those caught up in the disaster.

Over four hundred fifty people died in the Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and other areas.

The countries in the region have already been taking the brunt of changing climate that caused extreme weather patterns increasing the daily rainfall amount, droughts, untimely flooding and frequent tropical storms.
