Three people in CT have gotten sick from turtles, according to federal officials.

Dozens of people in 13 states have contracted Salmonella from pet turtles.

The mini reptiles have caused 37 people across 13 states to be infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Agbeni since March. Till now there are no cases of any deaths recorded, but it was reported that around 16 patients have been hospitalised due to the contraction of the salmonella bacteria. A third of the cases were in children 5 years of age or younger.

According to CDC officials, there were epidemiologic and laboratory findings that linked "the human SalmonellaAgbeni infections to contact with turtles or their environments, such as water from a turtle habitat". Almost half of 33 patients responding to questions said they'd had contact the week before with pet turtles, their food, tank or habitat. It said six people in the current outbreak reported buying turtles from a flea market or street vendor, or getting one as a gift.

The Food and Drug Administration has banned the selling of turtles with shells smaller than four inches since 1975 due to their salmonella connection.

The CDC recommends that people avoid purchasing a turtle with a shell length of less than four inches, as smaller turtles have been known to carry the disease.
