Princess Cruises said a 39-year-old Utah woman died Tuesday night on the Emerald Princess following a domestic dispute.
The Emerald Princess, carrying 3,400 passengers and 1,100 crew members, is on a seven-day round-trip cruise to Alaska from Seattle.
Passengers said the captain had previously instructed passengers in decks 8, 9 and 10 on the port side to return to their cabins so they could be interviewed by investigators about the incident.
The FBI said it is required to step in when such deaths occur in worldwide or USA waters.
Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Staci Feger-Pellessier said an agency team was headed to Alaska's capital city of Juneau and that, as of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made.
