Trump remarked that police shouldn't "too nice" when they put criminals in the back of paddy wagons, a comment which received applause from law enforcement present.

"Like, when you guys put somebody in the vehicle and you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, don't hit their head and they've just killed somebody, don't hit their head, I said, 'You can take the hand away, OK?'"

Flanked by uniformed police officers, Trump appeared to encourage them to abuse gang members taken into custody.

As News 12 has previously reported, Mickens and her friend Kayla Cuevas were brutally killed with machetes allegedly at the hands of the MS-13 street gang.

The gang has taken root in several major USA metropolitan areas in the past few decades.

In stark language, Trump said MS-13 members have stabbed, raped and murdered young people and "transformed peaceful parks and attractive quiet neighborhoods into blood-stained killing fields".

The Trump administration has made taking down MS-13 a new focus of it's hardline approach to illegal immigration. The FBI estimates that it has roughly 10,000 members in the USA, though those numbers are fuzzy.

"I was reading one of these animals was caught and [was] explaining they like to knife them and cut them and let them die slowly because that way it's more painful".

People claiming they were mistakenly included in gang databases and then targeted for deportation have filed at least two lawsuits, said Paromita Shah of the National Immigration Project at the National Lawyers Guild. "We can not accept this violence one day more".

Trump urged Congress to appropriate more money for immigration agents and judges, and to give them more authority to quickly deport people from Central America who cross the border illegally. The president said that the administration is working to change these laws.
