The investigation began June 26 when Spanish Fork police responded to a theft at a Wal-Mart.
When a loss prevention officer intervened, Wilde took off running while holding his three-month-old daughter in a vehicle seat and slammed into the exit doors, dropping her in the process. Wilde allegedly grabbed items off of the shelves in the store and walked up to the customer service desk and exchanged the merchandise for a gift card, as if he had already purchased the items.
As Wilde attempted to leave the store, he was approached by security.
Wilde made a run for it, dangling his two-month old daughter in a vehicle seat. He failed to negotiate the sliding doors and ran into them, dropping the auto seat and his daughter. He dropped his daughter a second time after he ran into another door. As he did this Wilde ran past a pillar. But Wilde dropped his daughter again, police say, after he ran past a pillar and hit the vehicle seat against the pillar.
Witnesses did try to stop Wilde.
Several shoppers tried to stop Wilde, according to the sheriff's office, and Wilde eventually gave the child to a stranger, ran to his auto and drove away.
However, he was eventually arrested in the parking lot. Child abuse based on the offense of child endangerment is normally a misdemeanor, but endangerment that results in mental illness or serious physical illness or injury is a felony.
