Ahead Of New Vote, UNESCO's Website Acknowledges Jewish History of Hebron

United States, Jul 7 The United States said today it was reviewing ties with UNESCO after the UN cultural agency declared the Old City of Hebron to be Palestinian territory and a world heritage site.

In a secret ballot, 12 countries voted in favor, three voted against and six abstained.

The Old City of al-Khalil is also home to the Ibrahimi Mosque, one of the key holy sites in the Muslim world. Israel requested a secret vote on the resolution but it seems this was not carried out.(ANSAmed).

Hebron's Old City has also been put on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites in danger. Several states objected, leading to a shouting match between delegates, and Israeli Ambassador Carmel Shama-Hacohen storming to the desk of the session's chairman to make Israel's case.

The religious significance of the city has made it a focal point for settlers, who are determined to expand the Jewish presence there.

The decision follows a spate of other recent outrageous resolutions passed by UNESCO, including another only this week, again denying Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon immediately denounced the decision as "a moral blot", saying it denied Jewish history in the city.

The Palestinian motion states that "since 1967, the impact of settlers, (there are two Israeli settlements in the property),[caused] further destruction of buildings and the development of new urban areas in the periphery of the town".

There have been scores of "hit and run" incidents targeting Palestinians in different parts of the occupied West Bank, with a lot of them largely going uninvestigated by Israeli authorities. A shouting match reportedly broke out between the ambassador and the Palestinian and Lebanese envoys over the issue, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.

The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, a conservative-leaning Israeli research group, said the Unesco designation ran contrary to the Palestinian commitments in the Oslo peace accords of the 1990s for the joint governance of Hebron and shared worship in the Cave of the Patriarchs.
