Pence lawyers up in expanding Russia probe

Speaking at the inaugural Conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America today, Vice President Mike Pence announced he will travel to Central and South America in August on behalf of President Trump.

Pence hired outside legal counsel to deal with the ongoing investigations into possible collusion between Russian Federation and President Trump's campaign, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

Pence has retained Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods to "assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel", according to a statement from Pence's communications director, Jarrod Agen.

Vice President Mike Pence told leaders of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that the US shares their goal of improving their economies, which coincides with a Trump agenda that includes stronger border enforcement and less illegal immigration.

Pence, who after the election served as head of Trump's White House transition team, has stood by Trump's assertion that there are no ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Pence's outside counsel selection process has been going on for weeks, and there was no singular event that prompted his decision to hire an outside lawyer.

The vice president's office said Pence's decision to retain Cullen underscores his desire to fully cooperate with any inquiries related to the Russian Federation probe and is in line with what Trump has done in hiring Kasowitz.

In a tweet Thursday morning, Trump called the Post's report "phony". "We think it's very hard to signal support effectively when you are proposing such draconian cuts", said Geoff Thale, a program director with the Washington Office on Latin America.

Cullen previously served as attorney general of Virginia.
