Texas Tech tops Sam Houston 6-0, reaches final of regional

The Red Raiders and Bearkats played for a packed house at Dan Law, with 4,732 fans in attendance.

After fueling the Bearkat offense in the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament, catcher Robie Rojas came through with the biggest hit of his life to help Sam Houston State move into the winners' bracket at the NCAA Lubbock Regional.

But before the inning could start, both teams were pulled off the field because of lightning in the area. It is the third time Sam Houston has advanced to a regional final, the last coming in the 2012 Rice Regional and also in Oxford, Miss., in 2007. Both runners would be stranded at the end of the inning.

Left-hander Seth Ballew got for the Bearkats and threw up three scoreless frames before surrendering a pair of runs in the fourth.

In the top of the fourth, Long led the inning off for Tech with a solo home run to right field, increasing Tech's lead to 4-0. The Blue Hens got to Ming in the eighth and scored two more runs.

With two on and two outs in the top of the sixth, Rojas sent a rocket over the center-field wall to put the Bearkats up 4-1, giving them the lead for good. DE answered right away with a run in the bottom half of the inning. "Just getting healthy and getting some at bats through my injury", Gardner said. Freshman catcher Michael Berglund hit a two-out double down the right field line, scoring Long from first. Matijevic led off the inning with a single to centerfield.

Sunday's game turned in the bottom of the second inning, when Sam Houston State scored eight runs - all with two outs. He's the first to tally over 100 strikeouts in a season since Chad Bettis (102) in 2010.

Despite committing three errors, the Bearkat defense played a major role in the win. "He could've gone back out there real easily, thought he was real efficient". The Wildcats got each of their first two batters of the inning on base, forcing Sam Houston to bring in Wesneski from the bullpen. He was replaced with junior lefty Dylan Dusek in the ninth, who allowed just one hit in the inning.
