The march was one of several across the country organized by ACT for America.

Demonstrators told FOX 4 they were marching against Islamic law and for human rights, protesting honor killings and female genital mutilation. The Minnesota State Patrol separated the groups and appeared to make at least one arrest.

However, Muslims and their advocates say Sharia plays a role similar to Jewish law - as a guide to religious life rooted in the Quran, the central religious text of Islam.

The protests happening in more than 20 major cities, including Chicago.

Counter protesters say that messages like the ones being relayed at the event are anti-Islamic and encourage a culture of hate. The anti-Muslim demonstrators derided the counter-protesters as out of touch elites.

ACT claims that it does not hate Muslims and disavowed a volunteer organizer in Arkansas who was affiliated with white supremacist groups.

The rallies, held in more than two dozen United States cities, were organized by ACT for America, which claims Islamic law is incompatible with Western democracy.

About two dozen people gathered to oppose Islamic law, and many were many carrying assault weapons and wearing military-style uniforms.

The "March Against Sharia" took place in cities including St. Paul, Minnesota, Seattle, Washington, and New York City.

But the overwhelming majority of Muslims don't want to replace US law with Islamic law, known as shariah, and only "radical extremist groups" would call for that, said Liyakat Takim, a professor of Islamic studies at McMaster University in the Canadian city of Hamilton, Ontario. Although the organization insists it doesn't oppose discrimination, it is clear that its protests gather together people who are opposed to Islam in principle.
