A black off-duty police officer in St. Louis, Missouri was accidentally shot by a white colleague during a gun battle between police and auto theft suspects.

The police department as of Saturday hadn't disclosed the names of the officers, who have been placed on routine administrative leave as the matter is investigated.

The 38-year-old black officer was off duty when he heard a commotion near his home and ran toward it with his service weapon to try to help his fellow officers, police said. He complied with the order and as soon as the officers recognized him they told him to stand up and asked him to come toward them.

Three people in the auto fired shots at officers, police said.

Acting police commissioner Lawrence O'Toole revealed that the officers were chasing a carjacked vehicle when three suspects inside started attacking the officers with their guns on Wednesday night.
