People from all over the region were able to enjoy the sight and NASA's Wallops Flight Facility has been posting astonishing shots of the launch and the clouds submitted by fans on its Facebook page.

NASA has been trying to create artificial clouds for weeks now, but the weather was never right.

NASA deployed a rocket early Thursday morning that created colorful clouds out of vapor in the Earth's upper atmosphere over the East Coast.

"The vapour tracers are formed through the interaction of barium, strontium and cupric-oxide", Nasa said ahead of the launch.

The launch of the Terrier-Improved Malemute two-stage sounding rocket had been repeatedly rescheduled, but the rocket finally got its chance at 4:25 a.m. EDT (0825 GMT) today (June 29). The agency is calling it "an early Independence Day fireworks display".

The clouds it created were visible along the mid-Atlantic coastline from North Carolina to NY, and could be seen as far west as Charlottesville, Virginia, according to NASA.

The canisters were deployed between four and five minutes after launch forming blue-green and red artificial clouds.

Since the canisters were released about 100 miles (160 kilometers) above the ground, the space agency says they "pose absolutely no hazard to residents along the mid-Atlantic coast".

'These clouds or vapour tracers allow scientist on the ground to visually track particle motions in space. This particular flight includes a multi-canister ampoule ejection system which enabled the tracers to spread over a wider area than before. Each time it was ready to launch the rocket, there would be clouds or rain or high winds.
