Wedding ring backpack stolen from victim of Portland double-homicide

OR police have detained a man who they believe stole a backpack and wedding ring from Rick Best, one of the two men stabbed to death in Portland last week while allegedly defending teen girls from bigoted taunts.

Police named the man as George Tschaggeny a short time after he was arrested at a homeless camp beneath a Portland highway overpass.

Police have yet to identify the suspected ring and backpack thief.

Police said Best's wallet was missing from his backpack.

Tschaggeny faces three charges, including theft in the second degree, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse in the second degree. A third man, Micah Fletcher, 21, was seriously injured and has been hailed as a hero.

Mr Tschaggeny was found wearing the victim's ring, which he apparently had removed from Mr Best's finger after the stabbing, said police spokesman Pete Simpson. The term "alt-right" encompasses those who subscribe to a white nationalist ideology, and the suspect in the attack, Jeremy Joseph Christian, is a "known white supremacist", according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, having posted such material online.

In the early morning hours of Friday June 2, 2017, Central Precinct officers located and arrested the suspect involved in the theft of a backpack and wedding ring of homicide victim Ricky Best. The suspect was caught on video carrying Best's black backpack off of the MAX train.

Mr Best and Mr Namkai-Meche died of their wounds.

Christian attacked the men after they tried to protect two young black girls at whom Christian was yelling racist and anti-Muslim remarks.

Appearing in court on Wednesday, Christian shouted: "Leave this country if you hate our freedom-death to antifa". He has yet to enter a plea on charges of aggravated murder and other crimes. "I hope they all die".

According to The Oregonian, a witness to the stabbings said Namkai-Meche's last words before being taken away by paramedics were, "Tell everyone on this train I love them". "I'm gonna say that on the stand".
