Hell freezes over: You can now upgrade your Mac at home

21.5 Inch iMac

Buying a New iMac? Here's What You Need to Know About 2017 iMac RAM Upgrades

Has Apple deliberately put upgradable CPU and RAM options for fans in the new iMac?

When was the last time you guys got to experience an iMac whose components you can actually upgrade if you felt that the current configuration had finally met its match thanks to taxing applications?

Specifically, iFixit found that both the RAM (or memory), the CPU (or processor) and the 2.5-inch hard drive (not the SSD) can both be upgraded without professional help.

Moving to the teardown of new MacBook and MacBook Pro, the teardown revealed that Apple hasn't changed much from the previous versions but has now included a second-generation butterfly keyboard originally debuted with the 2016 MacBook Pro, as pointed out in a report by 9To5Mac.

Theresa May, Jeremy Corbyn to face questions on live TV
In reply, Mr Corbyn said there was a period of silence for "everyone who died in Northern Ireland" at the 1987 event. However, in the past week, her lead has fallen dramatically with Labour taking a huge gain in the opinion polls.

Even if you decide to void the warranty, you will need specialized tools, guide, and of course skill to reach the internals of an iMac.

While the upgrade was anticipated and confirmed by Apple earlier in the year, in the words of iFixit, "Hell hath - indeed - frozen over" with the inclusion of components which are possible to upgrade by do-it-yourselfers.

The hardware experts at iFixit got their hands on the new 21.5' Retina iMac and commenced its usual teardown treatment.

Don't expect upgrades to be easy, however. With some time and effort, you could at least double the base 8GB memory of the model without forking out an extra thousand dollars or so for the same performance.

First, like the older models, those purchasing the 21.5-inch iMac are out of luck when it comes to user RAM upgrades.

iFixit says the new 21.5-inch iMac has a modular CPU so, in theory, you could swap it out for a faster unit when prices come down in future. "We can hardly believe our eyes", notes iFixit.

The company's products are notoriously hard to upgrade and Apple has always held tight control over all matters of hardware and software, so it's great to see that DIY upgrades are now on the table.

In what it describes as "a major win for upgradability", iFixit discovered that the iMac sports removable SO-DIMM RAM modules.
