The man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers.
Family members of Matt Mika say the MI native was shot multiple times in his chest and arm, and he remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital.
Although Scalise was able to talk while lying injured on the ball field, he had gone into shock by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital and arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said.
"Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg", MedStar said in a statement Thursday.
"Let us not jump immediately into blaming this one or that one", said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said. Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
"He will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time", he said.
As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise's honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had "improved in the last 24 hours".
The attack critically wounded House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and also injured Capitol police officers, and a current and former congressional aide.
Trump, who visited Scalise at the hospital on Wednesday, said the congressman was "in some trouble but he's going to be okay, we hope". The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL.
"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said.
Former UFC champ Matt Hughes involved in train crash, airlifted to hospital
Hughes is a UFC Hall of Famer - a 2-time welterweight champion who beat stars like GSP, BJ Penn and Royce Gracie . Hughes, 45-9, was airlifted to a hospital earlier today after the truck he was in 'collided with a moving train'.
Authorities say they are examining a cell phone, a computer and a camera found inside a white van where the gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several others had been living.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital Wednesday evening.
The House used a voice vote Thursday to approve a resolution lauding the Capitol Police for protecting lawmakers and stating that "violence has no place" in society.
Sava also said that Crystal Griner, one of the U.S. Capitol Police officers credited with saving Scalise and others at the field, sustained a gunshot wound to her ankle.
The deciding factor will probably be Louisiana Democrat Cedric Richmond, who may be the best to have ever played in the game.
