The Sensex touched a high of 30,017.82 points and a low of 29,911.44 during the day's trade.

The BSE market breadth was bullish, with 1,434 advances and 1,157 declines.

Indian shares rose on Tuesday with the benchmark Sensex reclaiming the 30,000-mark in early trade after investors built more bets and domestic financial institutions continued buying amid mixed Asian cues.

"Though Nifty traded in a narrow range, there was some stock/sector specific actions, mainly led by some metal and infra stocks, but the banking and PSU banking stocks cooled off and shifted into minor correction", Deepak Jasani, Head (Retail Research), HDFC Securities, told IANS. Sensex closed higher 7 points at 29,933 level.

"However, both the indices failed to hold the opening gains tracking depreciation of the rupee against the U.S. dollar".

Bharti Airtel fell 1.75 per cent as investors trimmed their positions ahead of its results.

"Banking sector stocks faced resistance at higher levels in the second part of the session and traded with mixed sentiments, while cement sector stocks complimented the firmness of the markets".

Among the top gainers, Wipro, Axis Bank, Adani Ports, Larsen & Toubro and International Olympic Committee rose 1-3 percent. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 23.30 points or 0.25% at 9,337.35 with 37 components gaining.
