Deputy White House Press Secretary Gives Briefing in Wake of Comey Firing

Trump also tweeted a threat at former FBI Director James Comey, saying there "better be no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

That led Trump to tweet Friday morning, "As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy".

He added, "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"

Sanders already defended the firing in an appearance on Morning Joe Wednesday morning. A White House official told CNN that officials at the highest levels, including the president, are monitoring Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders' performances as she substitutes for Spicer in the briefing room.

"Are you moving so quickly that your communications department can't keep up with you?"

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Tuesday that Rosenstein drafted the memo raising concerns about Comey on his own accord.

Melissa McCarthy adds spice (and Spicer) as host of 'SNL'
Baldwin's Trump bit continues to run on the stale side, but America loves it, so we're not expecting to see any changes. No doubt he will not care for the skit's ending, which had McCarthy's Spicer and Baldwin's Trump making out.

When Mason asked if the president recorded the conversations he had with Comey, and we're assuming that means the January 27 dinner when Trump asked the then Federal Bureau of Investigation director to kiss the ring, Spicer didn't deny it.

The White House also shifted its stance on whether Mr Comey's termination had anything to do with the Russian Federation investigation, at first saying it was not linked. Sanders said she thought Rosenstein, the No. 2 official at the Justice Department, was "a flawless example of what you would be looking for in terms of an independent person to come in and helm this investigation". "We don't always have the opportunity to go in to see the president, and I think in those cases we do a pretty good job of following up". Traditionally, there is an understanding that the White House has a responsibility to provide information on the administration's positions and responses to events, gained through press briefings where members of the media can ask questions. He or she may not succeed at doing that most of the time, especially with the clearly anti-Trump mainstream media.

But the revelation intensified the pressure on the White House from both political parties to explain the motives behind Comey's stunning ouster. And the big question, one source said, is whether it's temporary or permanent.
